The Link Between a DMX Desk and Your Colour Change Lighting
A DMX lighting desk or controller sends its instructions down a DMX512 line, but Collingwood's colour change fittings need that instruction converted into an RGBW or RGB signal before they can respond to it. The DMX2102 is the decoder that makes that conversion, sitting between the DMX control line and the low voltage circuit it drives.
A Compact Plastic Unit With Screw Terminals
The DMX2102 is a plastic bodied unit measuring 170mm long, 58mm wide and 28.5mm deep, and weighs 0.2kg. Screw terminals on one side take the DC power feed and the incoming DMX signal, including a through connection for daisy chaining on to the next decoder, while terminals on the other side carry the RGBW output on to the fitting. A small digital display on the front shows the DMX start channel address, so you can check or set which channel the unit is listening to without opening it up.
How It Works
- Takes a 24V DC primary input, up to 4A.
- Decodes the incoming DMX512 signal and outputs it across 4 channels for RGBW or RGB, at 24V DC, up to 1A per channel.
- Digital display shows the DMX start channel address for quick reference on site.
- Operates across a temperature range of -20°C to +50°C.
- CE and RoHS marked.
Where It Works Best
The DMX2102 belongs wherever a Collingwood colour change installation is already running from a DMX lighting desk or controller, in a plant room, a control cabinet, or wherever the low voltage wiring is gathered together, rather than out in the open. Because it's rated IP20, keep it in a dry indoor enclosure and let the fittings themselves carry whatever outdoor or wet location rating the job needs. It suits anything from a single feature wall of colour change lighting to a larger DMX controlled installation with several decoders daisy chained across different channels.
Collingwood Lighting
Collingwood Lighting designs and manufactures its LED products from Sywell in Northamptonshire, and has specialised in LED technology since 2002. Control gear like the DMX2102 sits alongside the strip, downlights and drivers the brand builds to work as one system, and Collingwood states it was among the first to bring mains dimmable LED products to the UK electrical wholesale market. The company has also been awarded a Gold medal by EcoVadis, placing it in the top 5% of companies assessed globally for sustainability.
Good to Know
- Rated IP20, so it needs a dry indoor location such as a plant room or control cabinet rather than direct outdoor exposure.
- Comes with a 3 year warranty.
- Made from plastic, weighing 0.2kg.
- Moonlight Design recommends installation by a registered NICEIC electrician, as this unit is wired into a DC lighting circuit.
Questions People Ask
- What does the DMX2102 actually do? It decodes a standard DMX512 control signal from a DMX desk or controller and converts it into the RGBW or RGB output needed to drive Collingwood's colour change fittings.
- Can I use this outdoors? No. It's rated IP20, so it needs to be kept in a dry indoor location such as a plant room or control cabinet, even if the fittings it's driving are rated for outdoor use.
- Can more than one decoder be linked together? Yes. The unit includes a DMX through connection alongside the main input, so it can be daisy chained on to the next decoder in a larger installation.
- How do I know which DMX channel the decoder is set to? A digital display on the front of the unit shows the current DMX start channel address.
- What power does it need? It takes a 24V DC primary input of up to 4A and outputs across 4 channels at 24V DC, up to 1A per channel.
