A Bolt On Way to Add Emergency Backup to a Caiman Light
This converter turns a compatible Collingwood Caiman luminaire into an emergency fitting, without needing to source or install a separate emergency light. It fits straight through the luminaire's M20 interface and, according to Collingwood, takes around 4 minutes to bolt in.
The Open Area Lens Version
This is the open area lens version, built to spread its emergency light evenly across a room rather than point it down a single route. Collingwood also makes a corridor lens version of this same converter, which throws a narrower beam suited to escape routes, so it's worth checking your layout before ordering to make sure this open area version is the right match for the space.
- 181mm long x 42mm wide x 45mm deep, weighing 0.2kg
- Puts out up to 2.5W at a fixed 6000K, with a 145° beam angle and a CRI of 70
- Polycarbonate housing, wired in parallel with the host luminaire
How It Works
It's a non-maintained converter, so its LED stays off during normal use and only lights up if the mains supply fails or during a test cycle. A built in self-test function checks its own battery and circuit periodically on its own, without needing a manual test key. Once it's triggered, it's rated to keep running for 3 hours, and the whole unit carries Class II double insulated electrics.
Where It Works Best
This converter is for anyone specifying or maintaining Collingwood's Caiman range who needs emergency provision in a space without ordering a whole separate emergency luminaire. It suits new installations planned around Caiman fittings from the outset, and retrofits where a site's fire risk assessment now calls for emergency lighting in an open area such as an office floor, a stairwell landing or a larger stockroom, rather than along a narrow escape route.
Collingwood Lighting
Collingwood Lighting designs and manufactures its LED products, including the Caiman range this converter is built for, from its base in Sywell, Northamptonshire, and has specialised in LED technology since 2002. The brand states it was among the first to bring fire rated and fully sealed for life LED products to the UK electrical wholesale market, and this converter's IP65 build is very much in that vein. Collingwood has also been awarded a Gold medal by EcoVadis, placing it in the top 5% of companies assessed globally for sustainability.
Good to Know
- Comes with a 4 year warranty.
- IP65 rated and IK07 impact resistant once installed inside a compatible Caiman luminaire, not as a standalone accessory.
- Built from polycarbonate, with Class II electrical construction.
- Only fits Collingwood's Caiman range fittings that have the M20 bolt-on interface, so check compatibility before ordering.
- Moonlight Design recommends installation by a registered NICEIC electrician, as this is a mains wired component.
Questions People Ask
What's the difference between this and the corridor lens version?
This open area lens spreads light evenly across a room. Collingwood's corridor lens version throws a narrower, elongated beam suited to escape routes and corridors instead.
Can this be fitted to any Collingwood luminaire?
No. It's built to fit through the M20 interface on Collingwood's Caiman range specifically, and isn't intended as a standalone fitting or a universal converter.
How long does the emergency light run once it's triggered?
It's rated to run for 3 hours from a full charge, whether that's during a mains failure or a test cycle.
Do I need to test it manually?
No. It has a self-test function that checks its own battery and circuit periodically, though it's still worth keeping a record of test results as part of your site's emergency lighting checks.
Is it suitable for damp or outdoor locations?
It's IP65 rated once installed inside a compatible luminaire, which covers protection against dust and water jets, making it suitable for exterior or damp locations as well as indoor use.
