Does the smoked glass really reduce the light that much?
Less than you'd think. The fluting in the glass disperses the light widely, so even though it absorbs a small amount, the effect is that light spreads rather than being blocked. In practice it's a quality of light change rather than a quantity drop.

Is this modern or traditional?
Definitely modern in its lines, but the muted grey tones give it enough restraint that it doesn't clash with traditional schemes. If your kitchen sits somewhere between contemporary and classic, this is a safe choice.
