Four Circuits, One Steel Plate

Four dimmer knobs in a row asks a lot of a switch plate, and this one answers with solid stainless steel rather than anything pressed or moulded. Each knurled knob runs its own circuit independently, so a busy room can be dimmed zone by zone from a single point on the wall.

The back plate is steel on every version here, so your decision comes down to the detail kit, the four knobs and coin screws. Steel keeps the face reading as one unbroken metal surface, while Brass warms up the knobs against it for more contrast.

How It Works

Four independent rotary dimmer modules sit behind the plate, each push on/off and turn to dim, wired two way at 10AX. Every module runs on standard UK 230 to 240V wiring at 50Hz and dims LED bulbs from 5 to 120W, or incandescent and halogen from 60 to 400W, with electronic soft start easing each circuit up from off.

Where It Works Best

This is the plate for a wall genuinely running four separate circuits, an open plan space with spotlights, a pendant, under cabinet lighting and a floor lamp circuit, for instance. With only two or three circuits to manage, the 2G or 3G steel plates give you the same build in a narrower footprint.

Made By Buster + Punch

The steel used here isn't a coating over something cheaper, it's the same approach founder Massimo Buster Minale brought from motorbike building in a Shoreditch garage to the company he started in 2013. He'd trained and worked as an architect, at practices including Foster and Partners, before deciding that a light switch deserved the same rigour as a building, and Buster + Punch's whole modular switch range still runs on that idea today.
