A 1G Metal Back Box for Solid Walls
This 1G back box is the concealed housing that sits behind a Buster + Punch UK switch or socket. It's built for solid wall installations, plaster, brick or masonry rather than a stud partition, and gives the electrician the depth and fixing points needed to mount the finished plate flush to the wall.
How It Fits Into the System
Once chased or drilled into the wall, the back box holds the wiring and terminal connections out of sight, with the decorative plate, dimmer or toggle module fixing to the front of it. Match the gang size of the back box to the plate you're installing: this is a single gang box, sized for 1G Buster + Punch switches, dimmers and sockets. As with all Buster + Punch electrical fittings, installation should always be carried out by a qualified electrician.

A back box is the one part of this system nobody ever sees once the wall is finished, which makes it a fair test of how seriously a brand takes the parts it doesn't have to show off. Buster + Punch was started in 2013 by Massimo Buster Minale, an architect who had worked at practices including Foster + Partners before he began machining his own motorbike parts by hand in a Shoreditch garage rather than buying them ready made. That same standard applies here: a concealed box built properly, not just cheaply, because the switch in front of it is only as good as what's behind the wall.

Is this the visible switch plate?
No. The back box is fitted into the wall and hidden once installed. The decorative plate and switch or dimmer module fix to the front of it separately.
How do I know if I need the solid wall or plasterboard version?
Check what's behind your wall surface first. This back box is for solid walls such as plaster, brick or masonry. For a stud wall or dry lining, use the plasterboard back box instead.
Do I need an electrician to fit this?
Yes. Fitting a back box means working with your wall's electrical wiring, so it should always be handled by a qualified electrician alongside the switch or socket installation.
