A step light that washes the whole tread, not a single spot
The Hunza Pure LED Step Light Louvre is a small, round fitting that recesses flush into the face of a step, wall or riser. Instead of an open lens throwing a single beam, the face is cut with five horizontal slats. Light escapes sideways through those slats and spreads into a wide, even band across the tread below, rather than one bright patch in the middle.
This is the Pure LED version. Instead of a separate replaceable lamp, it has a Cree LED chip built into the fitting, wired in series through a remote driver.
Solid copper, left to age naturally
This version is made from solid natural copper, not a plated finish over another metal. We checked Hunza's own studio photography before writing this, and the whole visible face, including the louvre itself, is one piece of copper.
- Copper is a natural, uncoated finish, so it will develop a patina over time rather than staying bright and polished.
- How quickly it changes colour depends on local air, rainfall and how sheltered the position is.
- Hunza notes that finish colours on screen are a guide only, so ask us for a physical swatch if you're matching several fittings.
How It Works
- Recessed body 63.5mm diameter, 68.5mm length, into a 63.5mm cut out.
- Flange 88mm diameter and only 3mm deep, slightly slimmer than the standard louvre version.
- Supplied with 1m of cable, wired in series rather than in parallel, which matters when planning a run of several fittings.
- The integrated Cree LED chip runs at 600 lumens, drawing 1050mA at 6 watts, with a colour rendering index of 90+ at 3000K.
- It needs a remote driver, sold separately, such as the 1050mA non dimmable driver that matches this fitting's rated current, or a suitable dimmable driver if you want the run to dim.
- Hunza lists this fitting as available to special order in a choice of beam angle (15°, 25°, 38° or 60°) and colour temperature (2200K to 4000K), so let us know your preference when you order.
- The louvre itself is fixed, so the horizontal spread is set by the slats rather than something you aim on site.
- Rated IP67, with a 10 year warranty on the fitting and 5 years on the LED chip.
- If you would rather have a lamp you can swap yourself in future, the same design is also available as a standard low voltage version with a replaceable MR16 LED lamp.
Where It Works Best
- Steps and staircases, especially longer runs where a Pure LED driver setup suits the install better than individually lamped fittings.
- Low garden walls and retaining walls either side of a flight of steps.
- Marking a change of level safely, such as where a patio steps down to a lawn.
- Anywhere a plain downlight would leave part of the tread dark or glare into someone's eyes, since the louvre keeps the light source itself hidden from view.
Our own installations
The in situ photographs on this page are Moonlight Design's own designs and installations, not stock imagery. They show stone staircases and garden steps we have actually lit, including a run of steps up to a garden pavilion and steps rising towards a lit tree and stone urn, both washed evenly along each tread. None of these particular photos show a fitting close enough to confirm which finish is pictured, so treat them as a guide to how the light behaves on a real staircase rather than a colour reference.
Good to Know
- Usually ships within 2 to 3 days. If it's out of stock, please allow 3 to 5 weeks.
- Returns accepted within 14 days if the fitting is unused, uninstalled and in its original packaging.
- The LED chip is integrated and not a swappable lamp, though Hunza notes the parts are serviceable if something does need attention.
- A remote driver is required and sold separately. Fittings in a run must be wired in series, not parallel.
- Strictly for outdoor use.
- We always recommend having outdoor lighting installed by a registered NICEIC electrician.
Questions People Ask
What does the louvre design do that a plain eyelid or solid hood step light doesn't?
An eyelid or hood shields the lamp from one side and throws light more in a single direction. The louvre's five horizontal slats spread light sideways across the whole width of the fitting, giving a more even wash along the tread instead of one bright patch.
Can I replace the bulb if it fails?
Not in the way you would with a standard lamped fitting. The Pure LED has an integrated Cree chip rather than a separate bulb, though Hunza builds the fitting to be serviceable.
Why is this wired in series rather than parallel?
Pure LED fittings share a constant current from a single remote driver, so they're wired in a series loop rather than the parallel wiring used on lamped low voltage fittings. Your electrician will need to plan the run accordingly.
Will the copper change colour after it's installed?
Yes. Solid copper is a natural finish and Hunza expects it to weather and patina outdoors rather than stay bright.
Can I choose the beam angle or colour temperature?
Hunza offers this fitting to special order in a choice of beam angles and colour temperatures, so tell us what you need when you place your order.
