A Spike Light That Adjusts to the Garden, Not the Other Way Round

The Spydra is a low voltage garden spike light that gives you two decisions most spike lights make for you. You can switch the wattage between 3W and 6.5W, and switch the colour temperature between a warm 2200K and a cooler 3000K, so one fitting covers jobs that would otherwise need two different lights. That flexibility, combined with a genuinely weatherproof build, makes it a sensible starting point for anyone lighting a border, a path or a run of planting from scratch.

This version is finished in a muted graphite grey, cast in aluminium with an anodised coating that resists fading in direct sun and rain. It reads as a quiet, almost gunmetal tone rather than a bright silver, so it disappears against gravel, dark mulch, slate edging or a grey composite path rather than catching the eye during the day. It sits well alongside contemporary steel edging, anthracite fencing or grey paving, and is available with either a domed or a flat top cover, in a 300mm or 600mm pole length, so the head height can be matched to the planting around it.

How It Works

Inside the head, the LED engine can be set to 3W or 6.5W, giving a light output of roughly 240 to 580 lumens depending on which wattage is selected. The colour temperature is switchable too, between 2200K and 3000K, and colour rendering stays above 80 CRI so foliage and stonework keep their true colour rather than looking flat. The light spreads through a 120 degree beam, throwing an even wash around the base of the fitting rather than a tight spot. It is a low voltage product, running from an 8 to 11V DC supply, and needs a compatible driver such as Collingwood's own DRV350700TD to work and to allow dimming. Cable exits the pole through a sealed gland, ending in two flying leads ready to connect to your low voltage circuit. The pole ends in an integrated ground spike, roughly 200mm on top of the pole length, and if you want the head lower in a bed you can simply push the spike further into the soil below where the cable exits.

Where It Works Best

Spike lights like the Spydra are made for planting rather than paving. Push it into a border to uplight a shrub or ornamental grass, line a run of them along a path edge for gentle wayfinding, or use one or two to pick out a specimen tree in a lawn. Because it is IP66 rated and built to cope with coastal conditions, it also holds up well in exposed gardens near the sea, not just sheltered urban plots. The switchable wattage and colour temperature mean the same fitting can do a subtle warm glow low down in a flower bed or a slightly brighter, cooler wash where you need a bit more definition, such as around steps or a change in level.
