Three Globes, One Orbit

The Schwung Universe 3 Light chandelier hangs three transparent glass globes, each a different size, from a single elongated brass ceiling plate. Set at three different drop heights and orbiting loosely around a central point, the composition avoids anything that looks assembled or arranged. It reads instead like a small solar system caught mid orbit, each globe pulled to its own height by an invisible line of gravity.

Transparent Glass, Three Sizes

The three borosilicate glass globes measure 250mm, 200mm and 150mm in diameter, each one left fully transparent so the filament of the bulb inside is visible rather than diffused. It is this mix of scale, rather than a uniform run of identical globes, that gives the Universe its sculptural quality, the largest globe anchors the composition while the smaller two appear to drift around it. Adjustable chain drops of 150mm, 300mm and 450mm are included, giving a fitted drop of between 875mm and 1775mm depending on how the chains are configured.

Choose Your Finish

The Universe 3 Light is available with its brass frame in Black Gunmetal, Lacquered Burnished Brass or Polished Nickel. Black Gunmetal gives the elongated ceiling plate and chain a dark, matte presence that recedes into the room and lets the three glass globes do the talking. Lacquered Burnished Brass keeps the frame warm and lightly aged, in keeping with the traditional Schwung look. Polished Nickel gives the brass a cool, reflective surface that throws back light from each of the three globes.

How It Works

Each of the three globes takes a 1.6W G4 LED bulb, included, producing a warm 2700K light at around 180 lumens per bulb, roughly 540 lumens in total. The fitting is dimmable, but only with electronic ELV or trailing edge dimmers, standard leading edge dimmers are not compatible. It is rated IP20 for dry indoor rooms only. The elongated brass ceiling plate measures 1282mm at its longest point and 250mm at its narrowest, with a fitted drop of between 875mm and 1775mm using the included chain lengths. The complete fitting weighs 20kg. It carries CE/UL safety certification and a 2 year warranty.

Where It Works Best

The Universe 3 Light suits a dining table seating four to six, where the varying globe heights sit naturally above the table rather than at one flat level. It also works well as a sitting room centrepiece, in an open kitchen where a single sculptural pendant replaces a run of downlights, or above a run of stairs where the different drop heights can be appreciated from more than one floor. Given its 20kg weight, confirm the ceiling structure can take the load before installing.

Made by Schwung

Schwung was founded in 2014 in Namyslow, Poland, by Belgian designer Dominique Sente and Dutch designer Rudi Nijssen. Every fitting, including the Universe, is made to order in solid brass and hand blown glass at the Namyslow workshop. According to Schwung, mixing globe sizes within a single fitting is one of the studio's recurring ideas, used to bring depth and movement to a design.
