An Asymmetric Frame for Five Globes

The Schwung Axis 5 Light chandelier suspends five transparent glass globes from a right angled brass frame that deliberately avoids symmetry. Where many of Schwung's chandeliers work through repetition around a central point, the Axis is built from straight brass sections set at right angles, so the five globes read as illuminated points along a frame rather than a ring or cluster.

All five globes measure 250mm in diameter, in clear borosilicate glass that leaves the bulb inside fully visible. Because the frame itself is asymmetric rather than the globe sizes, the Axis achieves its visual interest through geometry, the fitting reading as an arrangement of lines and circles from below and as something closer to calligraphy in profile. Adjustable chain drops of 150mm, 300mm and 450mm are included, giving a fitted drop of between 844mm and 1744mm.

The Axis 5 Light is available with its brass frame in Black Gunmetal, Lacquered Burnished Brass or Polished Nickel. Black Gunmetal gives the angular frame a graphic, matte silhouette against a ceiling. Lacquered Burnished Brass keeps the traditional warm brass tone through every angle of the frame. Polished Nickel adds a cool, reflective edge that catches light along each straight section.

How It Works

Each of the five globes takes a 1.6W G4 LED bulb, included, giving a warm 2700K glow at around 180 lumens per bulb, approximately 900 lumens in total. The fitting is dimmable, but only with electronic ELV or trailing edge dimmers. The brass frame measures 1506mm in length and 724mm in width, with a fitted drop of between 844mm and 1744mm using the included chains. The complete fitting weighs 12.7kg. It is rated IP20 for dry indoor rooms and carries CE certification with a 2 year warranty.

Where It Works Best

The Axis suits rooms where a conventional round or linear chandelier would feel too expected, a double height living room, a generous kitchen, an open stairwell, or a dining room with high ceilings and a contemporary interior. Its clear glass and angular brass frame sit as comfortably in an industrial leaning space as in a warmer, more eclectic one. Given its size and 12.7kg weight, confirm the ceiling structure can take the load before installing.

Made by Schwung

Schwung was founded in 2014 in Namyslow, Poland, by Belgian designer Dominique Sente and Dutch designer Rudi Nijssen, two collectors who set out to make the kind of lighting they wanted to own themselves. Every fitting, including the Axis, is made to order in solid brass and hand blown glass at the Namyslow workshop. According to Schwung, the Axis was designed to work through asymmetry rather than the repetition more common across the rest of its range.
