A Ceiling Light With Its Own Stained Glass Pattern
Fitted flush against the ceiling, the West End light is a bowl of Tiffany style glass in gold, red and green, arranged in a radiating petal pattern around a red glass centre. It sits close to the ceiling rather than hanging down, so it suits rooms where headroom is tight.
Vintage Bronze, And The Glass Itself
The visible metalwork on this West End light, the ceiling canopy and the arms holding the shade, is finished in Vintage Bronze, a dark aged bronze tone. The shade itself is the real subject here, assembled from many individually cut pieces of coloured glass using the copper foil method, in shades of amber, deep red, cream and green, radiating out from a red glass cabochon at the centre. Every panel is joined by hand, so no two shades are ever quite identical.
How It Works
The fitting takes 2 x E27 bulbs, not supplied, sitting behind the glass so the whole shade lights evenly. Wiring is Class I, which means it needs an earthed connection, and this being a ceiling fitting it should be installed by a qualified electrician. It will only dim if you fit dimmable bulbs, there is no dimmer built into the fitting.
Where It Works Best
At 42cm across and sitting just 14.8cm proud of an 18cm ceiling canopy, this is a semi flush design rather than a pendant, made for rooms with lower ceilings, hallways, or anywhere a hanging light would sit too low. Because the glass pattern is symmetrical it reads well from any angle in the room, which suits a landing or hallway where it might be seen from several directions at once.
A Reputation Built In Coloured Glass
Quoizel built a large part of its name on Tiffany style stained glass work, taking the copper foil technique developed for table lamps and extending it into ceiling and wall fittings like this one. The company started in 1930 in Manhattan under Michael Chaikin, and later moved its entire operation, design studio included, to a purpose built site near Charleston, South Carolina, where its glass and metal fittings are still put together today.
