Nicolls is built around a mercury glass body, a speckled, silvered glass finish that looks like an old mirror left to age, sitting on a brushed nickel foot beneath a taupe linen drum shade. It has more texture and character than a plain glass lamp, catching light unevenly across the speckled surface rather than reflecting it in one clean sheet.

What The Mercury Glass Actually Looks Like

The speckling runs across the whole urn shaped body, denser in some patches than others, which is typical of genuine mercury glass rather than a flaw. The neck and foot are brushed nickel, and the drum shade above is a warm taupe linen rather than a plain white or cream, with a thin nickel trim ring at the top edge.

How It Works

Nicolls takes one E27 bulb, not supplied, so you can choose your own brightness and warmth. It will dim if you fit a dimmable bulb, standard bulbs will not respond to a dimmer switch. It is wired to Class I, so it needs a properly earthed connection, and being a table lamp it needs no hardwired installation, it simply plugs in once the bulb is fitted.

Quoizel's history includes the Abigail Adams lamp, an oil lit design from the company's early Manhattan years that stayed in its catalogue for decades after it was introduced.
