A Softer Glow For The Front Door
Copper does something no polished metal can. Instead of catching the light, it holds onto it, and the Newbury lantern uses that quality well. This is a solidly made outdoor light with plenty of curves and old fashioned charm, built to sit beside a door or up a garden wall and just get on with the job for years.
Choosing Your Finish
This particular Newbury comes in Aged Copper, and in the photos you can see it is a warm, matte brown red tone rather than anything bright or reflective. It is a world away from the mirror shine of the Polished Brass version in the same range. Copper left outdoors will continue to change colour gently over time, picking up darker patches and a slightly duller surface as the years go on, which is exactly how a copper fitting is meant to behave. The six curved panes of clear bevelled glass stay the constant throughout the range, whichever finish you pick.
How It Works
Fit one E27 LED bulb yourself, it is not supplied with the lantern. The fitting is dimmable if you choose dimmable LED bulbs, so it is worth checking the bulb packaging before you buy. This is a Class I fitting, which means it must be properly earthed, and because it is hardwired rather than plug in, we would always recommend getting a qualified electrician to fit it.
Where It Works Best
At 35.6cm tall this sits as the middle size in the Newbury wall lantern family, taller and a touch heavier than the small version and built for a spot with a bit of presence, a front porch, a garage side wall, either side of a garden gate. The single bulb throws a soft pool of light rather than a floodlight glare, which suits a doorway more than a driveway.
Made By Quoizel
Quoizel started out in 1930 in Manhattan as a small lamp maker, and its very first products were not electric at all. They were hurricane lamps that burned oil, the kind you filled and trimmed a wick for, and one of those early designs, the Abigail Adams lamp, stayed in the catalogue for decades after. Lanterns like the Newbury carry a little of that history in their shape, that same sense of a lamp you would have hung by a door long before anyone had electric light to hang instead.

Questions People Ask
How does this compare to the small Newbury lantern? This medium version is 35.6cm tall against 33cm for the small size, and it is proportionally wider and deeper too, so it reads as a noticeably bigger fitting on the wall.
Does it come with a bulb? No, you will need to add one E27 LED bulb yourself.
Can I use a dimmer with it? Yes, as long as the bulb you fit is a dimmable LED.
