A Porch Lantern With Real Weight To It
This is the large chain hung lantern from the Newbury range, cast in solid brass and finished in a deep aged copper that already looks like it has years on it. Clear bevelled glass panels wrap the body on every side, so it throws a warm, faceted glow rather than a flat wash.
About The Aged Copper Finish
Aged copper is the darker of the two Newbury finishes, a deep oxidised bronze brown rather than a bright metallic shade. It arrives already looking settled in, and being an outdoor finish it will continue to weather gently over time rather than staying pristine, which suits a period porch or a covered doorway far better than a shiny new fitting would. If you want the same shape in a brighter tone, the polished brass version of this lantern gives you a much lighter, mirror like finish instead.
How It Works
Two E14 candle bulbs sit inside the glass panels, and these are not included so you will need your own, ideally a dimmable LED to keep running costs down. The fitting is wired to Class I, meaning it needs a proper earth connection, and because it hangs from a ceiling or porch beam it should be installed by a qualified electrician rather than fitted as a DIY job. It will work with a dimmer switch, but only if the bulbs you choose are themselves dimmable.
Where It Works Best
At 49.7cm tall and 26.4cm wide, this is the larger of the two Newbury chain lanterns, sized for a proper covered porch, portico or entrance canopy rather than a small alcove. It carries an IP23 rating, which protects against light spray rather than driving rain, so it is happiest under a roof or canopy rather than fixed to a fully open wall. If you need something rated for more direct weather exposure, the Newbury wall lantern in the same finish is built to IP44 instead.
Made By Quoizel
Quoizel started out in 1930 in Manhattan, and its very first products were not electric at all. They were oil burning hurricane lamps, made by a small company under Michael Chaikin before anyone in the business was thinking about wiring a chandelier. That practical, unfussy grounding in traditional lamp making still shows in fittings like this one, long after the switch to electric light.

Questions People Ask
How does this compare to the polished brass version? Same lantern, same dimensions, the only difference is the finish. This one is aged copper, a dark oxidised brown, while the other is a bright polished brass.
Does it come with bulbs? No. It takes two E14 candle bulbs and we would recommend dimmable LEDs if you want to use it with a dimmer switch.
Can I fit this somewhere fully exposed to the weather? It is rated IP23, which covers splashing rather than driving rain, so it is best under a porch roof or canopy rather than on an open wall.
