A Wall Lantern With A Window Like Arch
The Marblehead medium wall lantern borrows its shape from an old ship's lamp, a cylinder of rain textured glass held inside a steel frame that curves into a run of shallow arches. Mounted on a bracket that swings the lantern clear of the wall, it throws its single bulb out through glass that has genuine texture rather than a flat, smooth pane.
The Bronze Finish, Up Close
Palladian Bronze is the only finish this medium size comes in. In the photographs it reads as a near black finish with a warm bronze glow picked out along the raised edges of each arch and around the domed cap, rather than an obvious brown. The seeded glass genuinely ripples with texture, so the single bulb inside scatters into an uneven, softly broken light rather than one bright point.
How It Works
It takes a single E27 bulb, not supplied, so bring your own when you fit it. The fitting is Class I, which means it needs a proper earth connection, and it will dim as long as a dimmable bulb is fitted, since there is no dimming circuitry built into the lantern itself. It carries an IP44 rating, giving it real protection against driving rain and general outdoor damp, well suited to an exposed wall. Being hardwired, it should be fitted by a qualified electrician.

At 36.7cm tall and 22.9cm wide, this medium wall lantern sits above the small Marblehead lantern, which stands 28.1cm tall and 17.8cm wide with the same single bulb. Both project outward on a wall bracket, unlike the Marblehead flush fitting, which sits flat against a porch ceiling and runs two bulbs rather than one. This medium size suits a standard front door or a garden wall where a slightly taller, more substantial lantern is wanted without stepping up to a two light fitting.
Quoizel's Move South
Quoizel spent its first sixty six years headquartered in New York before relocating its manufacturing and distribution to a purpose built facility near Charleston, South Carolina, in 1996. The design studio still works out of the low country today, and the coastal, weather ready character of a fitting like this Marblehead lantern owes something to that Southern base.
