A Dome With Texture Built In

Instead of plain glass, Mantle uses a pressed prismatic dome, the kind with a fine ribbed pattern moulded right into the glass, so light breaks up as it passes through rather than shining flat. Here it sits in a dark, warm bronze frame that reads almost black from a distance and picks up soft gold undertones close up.

Palladian Bronze, One of Three Finishes

This dome ships in Palladian bronze, a deep, warm bronze rather than a true black, with fine antique highlights along the trim ring that catch the light at the edges. The same dome and frame shape is also made in polished nickel, a bright silver finish, and weathered brass, a softer antique gold. All three take the same two bulbs and hang at the same height, so this is purely a decision about which metal tone suits your ceiling fittings and hardware elsewhere in the room.

How It Works

Two E27 bulbs sit inside the dome on a bronze fitting, wired through a central stem and three curved arms that hold the shade close to the ceiling. Bulbs are not included, so choose your own, and the fitting will dim if you fit dimmable bulbs and have a suitable dimmer switch. It is a Class I fitting and needs an earth connection, and since it is hardwired we would recommend having it fitted by a qualified electrician. The glass dome attaches to the frame with small screws visible around the rim, so expect a short final fitting step rather than a fully sealed one piece unit.

Where It Works Best

At 24.6cm high and 32.7cm across, Mantle sits slightly shallower than some semi flush designs, which helps it clear lower ceilings in kitchens, hallways or dining rooms without looking squashed. The prismatic dome throws a broken, textured pattern of light rather than a flat wash, which suits kitchens where general light is wanted without a stark, uniform glow. In a dining room, the bronze finish here reads warmer and more traditional than the nickel version, so it tends to suit rooms with dark wood, brass hardware or older properties with existing period detailing.
