Stained Glass Overhead, Close to the Ceiling

The Cambridge semi flush takes a proper leaded glass shade, the kind you would expect on a large Tiffany style pendant, and hangs it close to the ceiling on a short chain rather than a long drop. It suits rooms with lower ceilings where you still want a real stained glass presence overhead.

The Glass and the Finish

The shade combines cream and honey tones with burnt orange and touches of green in a repeating Art Nouveau pattern, all held together with dark leading. Light shows through the coloured panels once it is switched on, which is really the point of a Tiffany style shade. The metalwork, chain and ceiling rose are finished in Vintage Bronze, a warm, dark bronze that keeps the frame in the background so the glass does the talking.

How It Works

It takes two E27 bulbs, not supplied, and carries an electrical class of Class I, so an earth connection is required. Dimming works if you fit dimmable E27 bulbs on a compatible dimmer switch. As a ceiling fitting it needs hardwiring, so have a qualified electrician install it, and take care when unpacking given the weight of leaded glass.

At 37cm high and 40.8cm across, this is the semi flush option in the Cambridge range, sitting close to the ceiling rather than hanging low like the matching pendant, and it works well in kitchens, living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms and hallways where headroom is limited. If you have the ceiling height to spare, the Cambridge pendant carries the same glass on a longer chain instead.

Quoizel built a real reputation on Tiffany style stained glass, starting with table lamps and later extending the same technique into chandeliers, pendants and semi flush ceiling fittings like this one. The company has been family owned since Ira Phillips bought it outright in 1986, following on from founder Michael Chaikin, and that continuity is part of why the glasswork here still follows traditional leaded construction rather than a printed pattern.
