This small Byron in Imperial Bronze carries the same boxy lantern shape as the rest of the range, just sized for a narrower door or a side entrance. Clear bevelled glass sits inside a mottled bronze frame, with a hammered copper disc behind the single bulb throwing the light forward instead of losing it in the glazing. It has real weight in the hand and on the wall, not the flimsy feel some smaller fittings settle for.

Imperial Bronze With Copper, Or Graphite With Pewter

Look at the photographs closely and the Imperial Bronze finish shows a mottled, rust brown patina with genuine depth, paired with a warm hammered copper disc. The alternative Graphite finish trades that for a cooler black frame and a pewter grey disc, a more modern pairing. Bronze tends to suit brick, stone and timber doors better than the starker Graphite option.

How It Works

One E27 lampholder sits inside the frame with the hammered copper disc mounted on the backplate behind it. No bulb is included, so choose your own, and a vintage style filament LED complements the exposed lamp and copper disc well. It will dim if the bulb fitted is dimmable and paired with a compatible dimmer, otherwise expect full brightness only. This is a Class I fitting, meaning it needs an earth connection at the wall, and its IP44 rating copes with rain and windblown spray without issue. Have it wired in by a qualified electrician.

Where It Works Best

At 30.5cm tall, 16.5cm wide and 15.2cm deep, this is the smallest of the three Byron sizes, right for a narrow porch, a side gate or an outbuilding where the medium at 36.8cm or the large at 45.7cm would look oversized. All three sizes share the same single lamp design and the same two finish choices, so a smaller Byron here and a larger one at the main entrance still reads as one considered scheme. At 3.2kg it is the lightest fitting in the range.

A Lamp That Outlasted Its Own Era

Quoizel's first products in 1930 were hurricane lamps that burned oil rather than electricity, and one of them, the Abigail Adams lamp, stayed in the catalogue for decades after the rest of the range had moved on to hardwired fittings.
