The Middle Size, Still A Statement
The medium Byron keeps the same boxy lantern shape as its larger sibling but in a size that suits an ordinary front door rather than a grand one. Clear bevelled glass on three sides, a graphite frame with a fine textured coat, and a hammered pewter disc set behind the single bulb to bounce the light outward. It has presence without needing a wall the size of a barn.
Graphite With Pewter, Or Imperial Bronze With Copper
This medium size comes in the same two finishes as the rest of the range. Graphite, shown here, is a deep charcoal black with a fine grainy texture, paired with a pewter grey hammered disc that reads cool and modern. Imperial Bronze swaps in a mottled rust brown frame and a warmer copper disc, a softer and more traditional look. If your door furniture and window frames are black or grey, Graphite is the easier match.
How It Works
A single E27 lampholder sits inside the frame with the hammered pewter disc fixed to the backplate behind it. No bulb is included, so you will need to source one. Fit a dimmable lamp on a suitable dimmer and it will dim, otherwise expect full brightness only. It is a Class I fitting, which means an earth connection is required at the wall, and it carries an IP44 rating for rain and splashing. As with any hardwired light, leave the wiring to a qualified electrician.
Where It Works Best
At 36.8cm tall, 20.3cm wide and 17.8cm deep, this is the size for a standard front door or a garage side entrance, somewhere between the large at 45.7cm and the small at 30.5cm. All three share the same single lamp design, so a matched pair either side of the door in medium, with a smaller version somewhere less prominent, keeps the whole exterior looking considered. At 4.4kg it sits comfortably in the middle of the range for weight too.
A Move South, And A Design Studio That Followed
In 1996 Quoizel relocated its headquarters, manufacturing and distribution out of New York to a 305,000 square foot facility near Charleston, South Carolina, where the company still operates today. That move brought the low country's light and landscape into the design studio, and it is where fittings like Byron are put together now rather than in the original New York works.

Questions People Ask
How does the medium compare with the large Byron? It is 8.9cm shorter, at 36.8cm against 45.7cm, and a little narrower too, so it suits a more modest door surround.
What bulb does it need? One E27 screw fit lamp, sold separately. Because the glass is clear, a decorative filament LED shows off the fitting best.
How is it fixed to the wall? Through the flat backplate at the top of the fitting, onto a wall fixing solid enough to carry 4.4kg.
Is a dimmer switch an option? Yes, provided you fit a dimmable bulb matched to a suitable dimmer.
