An Antique Brass Update on a Familiar Shape
Same tall, tapered Barbour body, different mood. In Weathered Brass the arm and backplate carry a warm, slightly aged gold tone rather than a bright polish, so the fitting sits closer to old brass than new metal. The white drum shade and clear glass column stay put, doing the same job of throwing a soft glow up the wall.
Choosing Weathered Brass
Weathered Brass is the warmest of the three Barbour options, next to the cooler Polished Nickel and the darker Harbor Bronze. Photographed close up, the finish has a slightly muted, worn in look rather than a mirror shine, which is what gives it the weathered part of its name. It pairs naturally with warm wood tones and aged brass hardware elsewhere in a room.
How It Works
The Barbour runs on a single E14 bulb, not supplied, and is rated Class I, so it must be earthed. Fit a dimmable E14 bulb and a compatible dimmer switch if you want to dim it, since dimming depends on the bulb rather than the fitting itself. It is hardwired, not a plug in design, so installation should go through a qualified electrician.
Where It Works Best
At 67.6cm tall and 23cm deep off the wall, this is a fitting for vertical space rather than a tight corner. Think either side of a bed, flanking a chimney breast, or spaced along a landing wall. Beyond the finish, there is nothing to choose between this and the Harbor Bronze or Polished Nickel versions, since size, bulb and dimming are identical across the family.
From Oil Lamps to Wired Fittings
Quoizel's earliest products, back in 1930, were hurricane lamps that ran on oil rather than electricity. As houses were wired for mains power the company followed, moving into hardwired chandeliers, pendants and sconces like the Barbour. The crystal accent under the shade is a small, deliberate echo of the glass and brass detailing on those original oil lamps, carried into a fully electric fitting.
