A Sunburst Pattern, Lowered Into The Room On A Short Drop Rod

The Asheville semi flush takes the same radiating glass pattern as the flush version and brings it a little further into the room on a square drop rod. The result is a softer, more three dimensional glow, since light reaches the glass from slightly below rather than skimming straight across it.

Valiant Bronze, And How The Glass Reads From Below

This one finish, Valiant Bronze, shows on the square ceiling plate and the short stem that carries the shade down from it. It is a matt, deep brown rather than anything shiny, with the odd lighter edge where the finish has been worked into the corners. The shade itself repeats Asheville's fan pattern, deep maroon lines sweeping out from a central point over honey and cream marbled glass, with pale cream at the outer edges and a warmer gold in the middle panels. Seen from underneath, which is how most people will actually view it, the pattern reads almost like petals opening out from the centre.

How It Works

Two E27 screw fit lamps sit inside the shade, lighting the glass pattern from within rather than throwing a strong beam downward. Bulbs are not supplied. Dimming depends entirely on fitting dimmable lamps yourself. It is Class I, so an earth connection is needed at the ceiling rose, and it should go up via a qualified electrician. At 3.2kg it carries a bit more weight than the flush version, on account of the drop rod and square canopy, so plan for two hands when you unbox it.

Where It Works Best

The shade measures 35.6cm across and the whole fitting drops roughly 30.5cm from the ceiling, noticeably more than the 16.7cm of the flush version in the same family, so choose this one where you have a little height to spare and want the glass pattern to sit more at eye level, over a dining table or in a hallway with a reasonable ceiling. Where the flush fitting is the answer for a low ceiling, and the table lamp version brings the same glass down onto a surface, this semi flush is the middle ground of the three, ceiling mounted but with some presence in the room.

Quoizel, The Company Behind It

Quoizel started out in 1930 as a small Manhattan company under Michael Chaikin, and its very first products were oil burning hurricane lamps rather than anything electric. As American homes were wired for electricity over the following decades, the business moved into hardwired fittings like this one, chandeliers, pendants and ceiling lights, carrying its glasswork habit with it. It remains a family run, privately held company to this day.

How is this different from the flush version in the same range? It hangs lower, dropping around 30.5cm from the ceiling on a short rod, compared with 16.7cm for the flush fitting, so the glass sits more at eye level.
