A Sunburst Of Warm Glass, Sitting Flush To The Ceiling
Switch the Asheville on and a fan of amber light spreads out from the centre of the shade like rays from a low sun. It sits almost flat against the plaster, a neat square of leaded glass with barely any drop below the ceiling, so it works where a hanging light simply will not fit.
The Valiant Bronze Finish, And The Glass Pattern Up Close
Asheville comes in a single finish, Valiant Bronze, seen on the round canopy that sits tight to the ceiling. It is a deep, warm brown rather than a bright metallic, with just enough sheen to catch the light along its edge. The glass itself is the real subject here. Deep maroon lines curve out from a central point across each panel, almost like the veins of a leaf or the ribs of a fan, set against honey and cream marbled glass that shifts from pale cream at the corners to a richer gold toward the middle. A soft peach coloured wedge sits at the very centre where the lines converge. Lit, the whole pattern glows gold and red. Unlit, the marbled cream and amber tones still carry plenty of interest on their own.
How It Works
Two E27 screw fit lamps sit inside the shade and throw light both down into the room and sideways through the glass panels, so the fitting reads as a lit pattern rather than a single bright source. Bulbs are not supplied. It will dim if you fit dimmable lamps yourself, since the fitting has no dimmer of its own. Electrically it is Class I, which means an earth connection is required at the ceiling rose, so it should be installed by a qualified electrician. At 1.9kg it is light enough for one person to fit without help, though the glass panels still deserve careful handling out of the box.
Where It Works Best
At 38.1cm square and only 16.7cm deep, this is the option for a room where ceiling height is tight or where a pendant would hang in the way of a door or a stairwell. It suits a landing, a hallway or a bedroom on its own, and works well as a pair either side of a kitchen or dining room where an even spread of light matters more than a single centrepiece. Quoizel also offers this pattern as a semi flush fitting on a drop rod, which brings the glow further into the room, and as a table lamp for a sideboard or desk. Choose the flush version specifically when ceiling clearance is the priority.
About Quoizel
Quoizel's reputation for glasswork goes back to its early years in Manhattan, where Michael Chaikin's small lamp company built a name for leaded and stained glass shades long before this kind of geometric pattern existed. In 1996 the business moved its whole operation, design studio included, from New York to a large purpose built site near Charleston, South Carolina, where shades of this kind are still developed today. The company has stayed privately owned throughout, which is part of why patterns like this one keep being made rather than quietly dropped.

Questions People Ask
How far down does it hang from the ceiling? Only 16.7cm, so it sits almost flush and clears low ceilings and doorways easily.
What bulbs does it need, and are they included? Two E27 screw fit lamps, not included. LED versions work well since the lamps sit inside the shade out of direct view.
Is it suitable for a bathroom? There is no published IP rating for this fitting, so it should be treated as a dry room light only.
