Blue Earth is a finish that feels like it belongs somewhere along the west coast of Ireland, a layered, shifting tone somewhere between pale sky and aged stone that sits differently in morning light than it does at dusk. On the Mullan Rivale Pendant it gives the handmade ceramic shade a quiet, atmospheric quality that works across a surprisingly wide range of interiors, from cool Scandinavian kitchens to warmer, more layered spaces where you want the ceiling to do something interesting without being loud about it.
Every Rivale begins its life at the ceramics studio in Mullan Village, County Monaghan, Ireland, where each shade is formed by hand, painted individually, and fired in the on-site kiln. The Blue Earth finish is applied in careful brushstrokes, and because the process is entirely handmade, the exact depth and variation of colour shifts from piece to piece in a way that a factory finish simply cannot replicate. Mullan Lighting was founded in 2009 by architect Mike Treanor, who set about restoring a derelict 19th century flax mill in the village and building a studio that now employs over 100 skilled craftspeople. The studio exports to more than 55 countries and its work can be found in landmark hospitality venues across the world, from the Titanic Hotel Belfast to Adare Manor.
The Rivale Blue Earth works beautifully above a dining table where the cooler tones of the ceramic complement pale stone, marble or timber surfaces beneath it. It also suits bedrooms and living rooms where you want to introduce a handcrafted material quality without committing to a warmer, earthier palette. Group two or three pendants at varying heights above a kitchen island for a more deliberate, considered effect, or use a single pendant to bring a quiet focal point to a hallway or reading corner. The wavy form of the shade, inspired by the Geum Rivale wildflower found in Irish fields, adds organic movement that no flat shade can match.
Available with a choice of clear, frosted or opal glass alongside antique brass, antique silver, matte black, polished brass and satin brass fittings. Made entirely to order at Mullan Village using sustainable clay and recycled brass. Please note that the exact colour and surface texture of each piece will vary slightly, which is what makes it yours rather than anyone else's.
