Blue Earth and Glass — Colour That Changes With the Light
The Rivale in Blue Earth is a pendant that behaves differently at different times of day. The ceramic body is hand painted at Mullan Village with layered teal and ocean tones that read as cooler and more aquatic in natural daylight, then warmer and richer as the evening light changes. Paired with your choice of clear, frosted or opal glass, the Blue Earth finish takes on a further dimension — the light passing through the glass interacting with the colour of the ceramic in a way that shifts subtly depending on which glass you choose. No two pieces are painted identically, so what arrives is genuinely yours.
How It Works
The G9 lamp sits inside the glass shade, so the quality of light in the room is shaped by your glass choice. Clear glass gives a focused, direct pool of light with the blue earth ceramic most visible from the outside. Frosted glass softens the spread and reduces glare, making the pendant feel warmer and more ambient. Opal glass gives the most even diffused glow, disguising the bulb entirely and letting the ceramic shade do the visual work. The blue earth tones catch at the ceramic edges regardless of glass type, adding depth that a plain shade cannot offer.
Where It Works Best
The Blue Earth Rivale is a natural fit for kitchens and dining rooms where a note of natural colour is wanted without a bold commitment. It works equally well as a bedside pendant, in a bathroom adjacent space, or as a single statement in a hallway where its shifting tones can be appreciated at close range. It pairs particularly well with natural stone, pale limewash plaster, warm timber and brushed or antique brass hardware. If your interior is built around cool neutrals and natural materials, the blue earth adds warmth without disrupting the palette.
The Story Behind Mullan
Mullan Lighting was founded in 2009 by architect Mike Treanor, who restored a long-derelict 19th century flax mill in Mullan Village, County Monaghan. The studio he built there now employs over 100 craftspeople. The blue earth finish was developed by ceramicist Stephen Kieran as a direct translation of the blues and greens of the Irish landscape into a ceramic glaze — the fields, sky and water of County Monaghan captured in hand-painted clay. Every piece is made to order and distributed to more than 55 countries.

FAQs
Which glass works best with the Blue Earth finish?
Clear glass shows the ceramic colour most vividly from outside the shade and gives the crispest light below. Opal glass softens everything and lets the ceramic body be the feature — the blue earth tones show beautifully against the diffused white of the opal. Frosted sits between the two. If you are unsure, opal is the most forgiving choice in most rooms.
Will the colour look exactly like the photos?
The blue earth finish is hand applied in layers, so the exact depth and distribution of colour varies between pieces. The photos give a good representation of the tone but yours will have its own particular character. This is what makes handmade ceramic worth choosing.
Can I use a dimmable bulb?
Yes. The Rivale works with dimmable G9 LED bulbs — make sure your dimmer switch is also rated for LED. Bulb not included.
