Red Iron — Warmth That Earns Its Place on the Ceiling
The Rivale Ceiling Light in Red Iron takes the earthy, iron-rich warmth of one of Mullan's most expressive finishes and brings it to a wall-mounted ceiling fitting. The tones range from warm terracotta at the surface through to deeper rust and ochre within the glaze, applied by hand at Mullan Village and fixed through firing in a process that preserves natural variation from piece to piece. No two shades come out of the kiln looking identical. Paired with clear, frosted or opal glass the red iron ceramic produces a quality of warm, characterful light that a plain shade could never match.
How It Works
The G9 lamp sits inside the glass shade. Clear glass gives the most direct downward light and keeps the red iron ceramic visible from the side, the warm terracotta tones catching at the rim of the glass and adding depth. Frosted glass softens the spread into a warmer ambient glow that suits rooms where contrast and direct light are not the priority. Opal glass diffuses the light most evenly and creates a striking visual — the warm earthy ceramic against the soft white glow of the opal. The red iron finish responds particularly well to warm-spectrum LED bulbs, deepening in colour and richness in the evening.

The Story Behind Mullan
Mullan Lighting was founded in 2009 by architect Mike Treanor, who restored a derelict 19th century flax mill in Mullan Village, County Monaghan. Ceramicist Stephen Kieran developed the red iron finish in direct response to the iron-rich soils and weathered stone of the County Monaghan landscape — a finish that carries something of the specific place where these lights are made into the rooms they eventually inhabit. Over 100 craftspeople work at the studio and every piece is made to order using sustainable clay and recycled brass. The studio distributes to more than 55 countries.

Which glass works best with the Red Iron finish?
Opal glass creates a beautiful contrast between the warm earthy ceramic and the evenly diffused white glow — particularly striking in the evening. Clear glass keeps the look more direct and graphic, with the red iron ceramic reading boldly from the side. Frosted works well as a middle ground in rooms where a softer, warmer spread of light is wanted.
Will my ceiling light look exactly like the photo?
Close but not identical. The red iron finish is hand applied and fired, so the depth of colour and surface texture vary naturally from piece to piece. The tones will be consistent — warm terracotta through to rust and ochre — but the specific character of your piece will be its own.
Is this suitable for a bathroom?
The Rivale Ceiling Light is IP20 rated and suitable for dry indoor areas only — not certified for use within bathroom wet zones. Please contact us if you need a bathroom-rated fitting and we will advise.
Can I use a dimmable bulb?
Yes. Compatible with dimmable G9 LED bulbs — ensure your dimmer switch is rated for LED use. Bulb not included.

Yes — returns are accepted within 14 days of delivery provided the item is unused and in its original packaging. Please contact us to arrange.
