Mullan Kauri Pendant 37cm - Black Clay with Finish Options

Black Clay: A Large Pendant With Genuine Material Authority

The Kauri Pendant 37cm in Black Clay is the largest pendant in the Mullan ceramic range at 37cm wide and 28cm tall. It is a fitting that commands a room rather than simply lighting it. The black clay finish is applied by hand at Mullan Village, County Monaghan, and fired on site, preserving the natural surface texture and variation of the clay through the process. Suspended on 1m of cable, the deep matte black ceramic shade faces downward, concentrating the E27 bulb's warmth into a broad, confident pool of light below while the ceramic body reads as a genuinely sculptural presence above it.

How It Works

The open ceramic shade faces downward, directing the E27 bulb's light into the room. The black clay body absorbs rather than reflects, creating a warm, broad pool of light beneath the pendant with a characteristic glow at the wide ceramic rim. At 37cm the spread of light below is noticeably greater than smaller pendants, making it suitable for larger tables and open plan spaces. Compatible with dimmable E27 bulbs for full mood control.

Where It Works Best

The Black Clay Kauri 37cm Pendant is made for above a large dining table, above a generous kitchen island or as a single statement piece in an open plan living and dining space. Its scale means it works best as a solo pendant rather than grouped. The deep black clay finish sits confidently alongside pale walls and bright interiors as well as darker, more moody schemes, and pairs particularly well with antique brass, aged timber, dark stone and warm woven textiles.

The Story Behind Mullan

Mullan Lighting was founded in 2009 by architect Mike Treanor, who restored a derelict 19th century flax mill in Mullan Village, County Monaghan. The black clay finish draws from the iron rich soils and ancient bog landscapes of that part of Ireland. Over 100 craftspeople work at the studio and every piece is made to order using sustainable clay and recycled brass. The studio distributes to more than 55 countries.

FAQs

What bulb does the Kauri 37cm Pendant take?
It takes a standard E27 screw fit bulb, maximum 40W. Bulb not included. A warm white LED E27 suits the black clay finish well. A dimmable version gives full control over the mood in the room.

Can the cable length be adjusted?
The pendant is supplied with 1m of cable. Your electrician can adjust this during installation if a different hanging height is needed. We recommend discussing the ideal height with your installer before fitting.

Will my pendant look exactly like the photo?
Close but not identical. The black clay finish is hand applied and fired, so surface texture and depth of tone vary naturally between pieces. Your fitting will be tonally consistent with the photos but will have its own surface character.

Can I use a dimmable bulb?
Yes. Compatible with dimmable E27 LED bulbs. Ensure your dimmer switch is rated for LED use. Bulb not included.

Can I return it?
No. Every Mullan light is made to order, so it cannot be returned unless it arrives faulty or damaged. If anything is wrong when it arrives, please contact us as soon as possible.
