Mullan Kauri Ceiling Light - Black Clay with Finish Options

Black Clay: Depth and Presence on the Ceiling

The Kauri Ceiling Light in Black Clay is a 20cm handmade ceramic fitting with the deep, matte authority of the black clay finish and a taller, more architectural profile than the broader Bog Oak and Kapok ranges. At 20cm tall and 20cm wide it is one of the more sculptural ceiling light forms in the Mullan collection, with the ceramic shade rising from the ceiling plate in a way that makes it visually interesting from every angle. The black clay finish is applied by hand at Mullan Village, County Monaghan, and fired on site, preserving the natural surface texture and subtle variation of the clay through the process.

How It Works

The open ceramic shade faces downward, directing the E27 bulb's light into the room. The black clay body absorbs rather than reflects, creating a warm, focused pool of light beneath with a characteristic glow at the ceramic rim. Compatible with dimmable E27 bulbs. Lower, warmer light levels in the evening bring out the natural surface texture of the black clay finish most clearly and create the most atmospheric result in a room.

Where It Works Best

The Black Clay Kauri suits bedrooms, dining rooms, hallways and living rooms where a ceiling fitting with genuine sculptural quality is wanted. Its taller form makes it particularly effective in rooms with higher ceilings where a flatter fitting might feel lost. The deep black clay finish works confidently alongside pale walls and bright interiors as well as darker, more moody schemes. It pairs particularly well with antique brass, aged timber, dark stone and warm woven textiles.

The Story Behind Mullan

Mullan Lighting was founded in 2009 by architect Mike Treanor, who restored a derelict 19th century flax mill in Mullan Village, County Monaghan. The black clay finish draws from the iron rich soils and ancient bog landscapes of that part of Ireland. Over 100 craftspeople work at the studio and every piece is made to order using sustainable clay and recycled brass. The studio distributes to more than 55 countries.

FAQs

What bulb does the Kauri Ceiling Light take?
It takes a standard E27 screw fit bulb, maximum 40W. Bulb not included. A warm white LED E27 suits the black clay finish well. A dimmable version gives full control over the mood in the room.

Will my ceiling light look exactly like the photo?
Close but not identical. The black clay finish is hand applied and fired, so surface texture and depth of tone vary naturally between pieces. Your fitting will be tonally consistent with the photos but will have its own surface character.

Is this suitable for a bathroom?
The Kauri Ceiling Light is IP20 rated and suitable for dry indoor areas only. It is not certified for bathroom wet zones. Please contact us if you need a bathroom rated fitting and we will advise.

Can I use a dimmable bulb?
Yes. Compatible with dimmable E27 LED bulbs. Ensure your dimmer switch is rated for LED use. Bulb not included.

Can I return it?
No. Every Mullan light is made to order, so it cannot be returned unless it arrives faulty or damaged. If anything is wrong when it arrives, please contact us as soon as possible.
