A whale suspended in fiberglass

Moby Dick is Karman's sculptural pendant shaped after the curved back of a breaching whale, cast in white fiberglass that glows softly once lit. Designed by Matteo Ugolini, the fiberglass shell is smooth on the outside and left rough within, so the light that passes through it looks uneven and alive rather than flat.

The big size, IP44 rated

This is the larger of the two IP44 Moby Dick pendants, spanning 150cm end to end and built to the same generous scale as the indoor version, but rated IP44 for use somewhere the indoor edition can't go. IP44 rated, suitable for bathroom zones 2 and 3, or covered and sheltered outdoor areas, check local wiring regulations for your specific installation location, as this rating covers splashing water rather than direct rain or full outdoor exposure.

How it works

It's a ceiling mounted pendant that takes a single E27 bulb, compatible with incandescent, halogen or LED sources, rated up to a maximum of 20W to suit its IP44 wet location certification. It's a fixed, hardwired fitting, supplied ready to be wired in.

Where it works best

Think of a large bathroom with a generous ceiling, or a covered terrace, porch or sheltered balcony where the fitting stays out of direct rain. Allow enough drop and headroom for the whale's full 150cm length to be seen properly, and keep it away from anywhere it could be exposed to more than incidental splashing.

Karman craftsmanship

Karman has been working with fiberglass, resin and other unconventional materials from its base in Fossombrone, in Italy's Marche region, since 2005, and Karman states its lighting is made entirely in Italy. This IP44 edition of Moby Dick lets that same sculptural piece move into bathrooms and covered outdoor spaces without losing its form.
