A whale suspended in fiberglass

Moby Dick is Karman's sculptural pendant shaped after the curved back of a breaching whale, cast in white fiberglass that glows softly once lit. Designed by Matteo Ugolini, it pairs a smooth outer shell with a deliberately rough inner surface, so light filters through unevenly and the form seems to shift as you move around the room.

The big size

This is the larger of the two indoor Moby Dick pendants, spanning 150cm end to end. It's a piece built to be the focal point of a room, with enough scale to hold its own over a long dining table or in a double height stairwell, rather than blend into a wider scheme.

How it works

It's a ceiling mounted pendant that takes a single E27 bulb, compatible with incandescent, halogen or LED sources, up to a maximum of 105W. It's a fixed, hardwired fitting, supplied ready to be wired in.

Where it works best

Best suited to rooms with height to spare, an entrance hall, a stairwell, or an open plan living or dining space where a ceiling of around 2.7m or more lets the whale's silhouette read properly from below. This is an indoor fitting and a fixed installation, so measure your ceiling height and intended drop before ordering.

Karman craftsmanship

Karman has been working with fiberglass, resin and other unconventional materials from its base in Fossombrone, in Italy's Marche region, since 2005, and Karman states its lighting is made entirely in Italy. Moby Dick is one of the pieces that best captures that sculptural streak, treating light fittings as objects of form first.
