A Solid Stainless Steel Eyelid Step Light Wired Straight to the Mains
This is the GU10 mains version of Hunza's Step Light Solid Eyelid in marine grade stainless steel, a recessed fitting with a solid metal eyelid hood cast over the lamp face. The hood curves down and forward so light spills across the step or path below it rather than shining back up at anyone walking past. Being a mains GU10 fitting, it runs straight off your household supply with no transformer to plan for.
Solid 316 Stainless Steel Eyelid
The flange and eyelid hood on this fitting are cast from marine grade 316 stainless steel, not plated onto another metal underneath, with a brushed finish and Hunza's small stamped H mark on the face. 316 grade is the specification Hunza uses where a fitting needs real resistance to corrosion, which is why it suits coastal and exposed sites. It can still pick up a light surface tarnish in some environments, and Hunza recommends regular washing to keep it looking its best.
How It Works
The eyelid hood covers around two thirds of the lamp face in a fixed position, so it cannot be aimed or adjusted after fitting. The shape does the work instead, directing light down and forward across a step tread or path while keeping the lamp itself out of direct view. The recessed body measures 63.5mm in diameter and 90mm in length, longer than the low voltage version to house the GU10 lamp holder, with a 63.5mm cut out. The visible flange is 88mm across and 7mm deep, and the eyelid adds a further 25mm of depth.
Being mains voltage and wired in parallel, this eyelid step light needs no transformer, just a Hunza approved GU10 LED lamp, sold separately. If your installation runs on a low voltage circuit instead, the same eyelid is also available as the standard low voltage version, which takes an MR16 lamp and a buriable transformer.
Where It Works Best
- Recessed brick or stone steps near the coast or in exposed, salt laden air
- Fitted into retaining walls or low garden walls beside a path
- Projects already wired for mains rather than a low voltage transformer circuit
- Anywhere a cleaner, brighter metal look is wanted rather than copper or a painted finish
Our Own Installations
The in situ photographs on this page, showing the eyelid recessed into brick step risers, timber railway sleeper steps and curved garden walls, are Moonlight Design's own designs and installations. They are not stock imagery. They give a real sense of how this eyelid step light sits and lights a step or wall once fitted, rather than a studio shot on its own.

Questions People Ask
Does this GU10 version need a transformer?
No. This is the mains version, so it wires straight into your mains supply and only needs a Hunza approved GU10 LED lamp, sold separately.
Is this solid stainless steel or just a plated finish?
It is a solid casting in marine grade 316 stainless steel, not a plated coating over another metal.
Is 316 stainless steel suitable for coastal sites?
Yes. 316 is the marine grade Hunza uses specifically for its resistance to salt air and corrosion, though it can still pick up a light surface tarnish and benefits from regular washing.
Is this the same body size as the low voltage stainless steel version?
Almost. The recessed body is 90mm long on this GU10 mains version against 68.5mm on the low voltage version, to accommodate the GU10 lamp holder, though the visible flange and eyelid are the same size on both.
