The story behind Hinkley

Hinkley started out in 1922 as a small outdoor lantern maker in Cleveland, Ohio, when Phil R. Hinkley launched the company with a debut catalogue of just 14 products. When Phil fell ill with tuberculosis in the mid 1930s, Stanley Wiedemer, a travelling salesman from Kansas City, bought half the business, then took on the rest after Phil died in 1937 and moved his own family to Ohio to run it. That family stewardship carried the company through four generations, from Stanley's grandson Rick, who joined in 1969, to Kristi, Jess and Eric Wiedemer taking on leadership from around 2000. Since 2012, Elstead Lighting has manufactured and adapted Hinkley's designs, including pieces like this Champagne Gold Spyre, for UK wiring and CE certification, so a fitting with roots in a century old family workshop ends up on walls in Britain today.
