A black outdoor pendant with a ribboned silhouette
The Carson pendant takes the collection's overlapping ribbon design and hangs it from the ceiling rather than fixing it to a wall. In this Olde Black finish, it reads a touch darker and more understated than the rest of the Carson range, while keeping the same faceted metalwork and glass panels that give the collection its transitional look.

The frame is handcrafted aluminium finished in a deep Olde Black, paired with clear seeded glass panels that soften the light without hiding it. The dark finish sits well against brick, render or painted timber, and pairs naturally with black door furniture, house numbers or other exterior ironwork.
How it works
This is a single light pendant taking one E27 LED bulb, which isn't included so you'll need to add one to your order. It's dimmable if you fit dimmable LED bulbs, though a standard bulb will just run at a fixed brightness. The drop is adjustable, from around 43.3cm up to 119.3cm, so it can be set to the right height for a porch or covered exterior ceiling. We always recommend a qualified electrician installs this fitting. It's a Class I fitting, which means it needs to be properly earthed.
Where it works best
Carson is IP44 rated, which covers protection against splashing water, so this pendant is built for genuine outdoor use in a covered spot rather than somewhere exposed to direct, heavy rain. That makes it a good fit over a porch, an outdoor seating area, or another sheltered exterior ceiling, where you want one clear pool of light rather than a broad wash.
The story behind Hinkley
Hinkley started out in 1922 as a small outdoor lantern maker in Cleveland, Ohio, founded by Phil R. Hinkley with a debut catalogue of just fourteen products. The Carson pendant's overlapping ribbon silhouette and exterior focus sit close to that original brief, even though the business has grown into a much broader lighting and fan company since. The Hinkley name itself is a recent simplification: the business traded as Hinkley Lighting until 2019 to 2020, when it dropped Lighting after expanding into ceiling fans. Since 2012, Elstead Lighting has adapted Hinkley's designs for the UK and Europe, converting fittings like this one to 220 to 240V wiring with full CE certification.
