The Brindley wall light is hand spun from solid brass, shaped into a single angled shade on a jointed arm so it can be aimed exactly where the light is needed. In this Soot finish, the outer shade sits in a deep charcoal grey while the inside stays bright hammered nickel, so the fitting reads as a quiet, dark shape on the wall until it's switched on.

Soot is a dark grey exterior coating applied over the solid brass shade, left matte rather than polished. Inside, the nickel plating is hammered rather than smooth, so once lit it throws a soft, dappled wash of light instead of a single hard beam. The contrast between the flat grey outside and the bright, textured inside is the main character of this finish.

From The Anvil began in 1996, when Mark Underhill, a former metalwork teacher and joiner, bought a small ironmongery supplier called MF Supplies and started hand forging his own range of hardware from a workshop in Mid Wales, working alongside his wife Bernadette. The From The Anvil brand launched in 2000 with around fifty handmade products, and the business went on to relocate to Llandrindod Wells, Powys, growing into a family run manufacturer of ironmongery, lighting and homeware that still hand forges steel and hot forges brass and copper using traditional methods alongside modern engineering. This Brindley wall light's Soot shade is one of those pieces, spun and finished by hand at that same Welsh workshop rather than machine coated.
