A Directional Wall Light With a Hammered Nickel Glow

The Brindley wall light is built to be aimed rather than fixed in one position. Two adjustable knuckle joints let the shade swing and tilt on its arm, so the light can be pointed exactly where it's needed, up a wall, down onto a bedside table, or along a hallway. Spun from solid brass, it's finished in a deep, matt Elan Black on the outside, with a polished nickel rim and a hammered nickel interior that catches and scatters the light once it's switched on.

The brass body is plated in nickel first, then coated in a flat, matt black on every visible surface bar the rim and the interior of the shade. That contrast is the point. The black stays quiet on the wall by day, and at night the hammered nickel lining glows warm and dappled rather than throwing one flat beam. The wing nut joints at the wall plate and shade are left in polished nickel too, giving the black shade two small points of shine.

From The Anvil started in 1996, when Mark Underhill, a former metalwork teacher and joiner, bought a small ironmongery supplier called MF Supplies and began hand forging his own range of hardware from a workshop in Mid Wales, working alongside his wife Bernadette. The brand itself launched in 2000 with around fifty handmade products, and the business went on to relocate to Llandrindod Wells, Powys, growing into a family run manufacturer of ironmongery, lighting and homeware that still hand forges steel and hot forges brass and copper using traditional methods alongside modern engineering. This Brindley wall light's black and nickel finish is applied at that same Welsh workshop, brass first plated then hand coated rather than produced as a single mass applied colour.

• Can the angle of this wall light be adjusted? Yes. It has two wing nut knuckle joints, one at the wall plate and one at the shade, so it can be tilted and swung to point where the light is needed.
