A Directional Wall Light With a Dusky, Weathered Finish

The Brindley wall light is a single hammered brass dome on an adjustable arm, built to throw a directional pool of light rather than a flat wash. In this Dusk finish, the outside of the shade is painted a deep blue grey, while the rim and interior stay in bright polished brass, so the light itself glows warm even though the shade reads cool and dark from the outside. Two brass wingnut joints, one at the wall plate and one at the shade, let the angle be set up, down or across.

Dusk is a painted finish applied over hammered brass, and the hammer marks stay visible beneath the colour, giving the surface real texture rather than a flat coat. The paint stops at the rim, so the polished brass edge and the hammered brass interior are left exposed. Once lit, that hammered brass throws a soft, dappled pattern of light rather than a single even glow.

From The Anvil was founded in 1996, when Mark Underhill, a former metalwork teacher and joiner, bought a small ironmongery supplier called MF Supplies and began hand forging his own range of hardware from a workshop in Mid Wales, working alongside his wife Bernadette. The From The Anvil brand launched in 2000 with around fifty handmade products, and the business went on to relocate to Llandrindod Wells, Powys, growing into a family run manufacturer of ironmongery, lighting and homeware that still hand forges steel and hot forges brass and copper using traditional methods alongside modern engineering. The Brindley wall light's hammered shade and its Dusk finish are both worked by hand at that same Welsh workshop, which is why the hammer marks and the paint edge never look quite machine made.
