A coach light without the overhang

York takes the classic shape of an old English coach lantern, a pyramidal roof sitting over a glazed box, and flattens it against the wall so the light sits close and safe rather than jutting out into a path or doorway. It gives you the character of a proper lantern in exactly the spots where a projecting one would catch on a swinging door or get knocked by someone squeezing past.

The body is cast in a single piece of die cast aluminium and finished in a deep matte black, giving it the weight and solidity of ironwork without actually being iron. Three of its four sides are glazed in a heavily textured glass that ripples the light passing through it, so the bulb reads as a soft glow rather than a bare point, and the black finish stays looking crisp rather than showing every mark.

How It Works

It takes a single E27 LED bulb, which isn't supplied, so you'll need to fit one before it can be used. Fit a dimmable bulb and York will respond to a dimmer switch, running from a low glow to a brighter porch light. Because it's a flush fitting rather than a projecting one, the backplate sits almost flat to the wall, with just enough depth for the bulb and glass to clear the surface.

Where It Works Best

Its low, flush profile makes it a good fit for porches, storm porches, narrow side passages or anywhere a projecting lantern would be knocked or catch on a door swinging open. York is rated IP23, which covers protection from light spray and rain blown at an angle, so it suits a covered porch or sheltered doorway well but shouldn't be fitted somewhere it will take direct, driving rain.
