A patina that arrives already settled
Verdigris does something no paint finish can quite fake: it looks like weather has already had its say. This St Martins lantern comes in a mottled, chalky green that mimics aged copper, so it arrives looking lived in rather than brand new.
The verdigris finish
Underneath the colour is solid brass, cast into the same boxy, stepped lantern shape as the rest of the St Martins range. The verdigris treatment is deliberately uneven, patchier in places and deeper green in the recesses of the moulding, and it sits alongside clear glass panels that let the shape of the frame show through even when the light is off.
How It Works
It takes one E27 LED bulb, not included, and is wired to Class I standard, so it needs to run from an earthed circuit. Choose a dimmable E27 bulb if you want to run it from a dimmer switch. The bulb shown in photography is styled for effect; the fitting itself is supplied without one.
Where It Works Best
Because the colour already reads as weathered, St Martins suits older brick, stone or render, coastal properties, or anywhere a brand new brass lantern would look slightly at odds with the building. With an IP44 rating it is built to cope with rain and salt air, so it works as well beside a front door as it does spaced along an exposed garden wall or porch.
Elstead Lighting
St Martins is part of the Elstead Lighting collection, a British lighting group whose history traces back to The Elstead Forge in Alton, Hampshire, and which remains led by the Lucas family today. The same lantern shape appears elsewhere in the range in brighter, unweathered finishes, so a verdigris St Martins can also be paired with a newer fitting from the same family if you are lighting more than one entrance.
