Somerton trades the usual cottage porch shape for something with a bit more attitude, a wide tilted brim sitting above a swan neck arm that curves out from the wall before dropping straight down to the lamp. It reads closer to an old railway platform light than a typical porch fitting, and it's built to be noticed as much as it is to light the space around it.

Aged Brass Finish

This version is finished in aged brass, a warm brown gold tone rather than a bright polished shine, so it settles in against stone, brick or painted render instead of standing out as something new. The finish sits over a solid brass frame with a clear glass shade beneath the brim, and a wire cage wraps around the glass for a bit of extra protection against knocks.

How It Works

A single E27 LED bulb, not supplied, sits inside the glass shade beneath the metal brim, shielded from the weather while still letting the light spill out and down. The swan neck arm gives the head enough reach to throw light across a doorway or path rather than straight down at the wall, and fitting a dimmable LED lets it work on a compatible dimmer circuit.

Where It Works Best

Fit it either side of a front door, along a boundary wall or near a gate, anywhere a bit of swing and character suit the setting better than a flat modern fitting. Rated IP44, it's built to cope with exterior conditions, from standing rain to coastal air, and the wide brim helps keep direct rain off the glass while it lights the steps or path below.

Somerton comes from Elstead, a British lighting group whose roots trace back to The Elstead Forge in Alton, Hampshire, and which is still led by the Lucas family today. It shares its glass and cage assembly with the Sheldon lantern elsewhere in the Elstead range, though Somerton's brim is wider and its arm more rounded, giving it a slightly softer outline by comparison.
