Picture lights earn their keep by doing one job well: throwing a clean, even wash of light across whatever is hanging on the wall, without glare or hot spots. This small single light from Elstead does exactly that, in a neat cylindrical shade carried on a gently curved arm.

Brushed Brass gives it a warm, matte gold tone with a fine grain finish rather than a mirror shine, so it reads as understated rather than flashy. The square wall plate carries a faceted fan pattern pressed into the metal, a nice detail even before the lamp is switched on.

How it works

A single bulb sits inside the cylinder and shines down and out along its length rather than out into the room. The arm has a wire wrapped section and an adjustable knuckle joint, tightened with a small wing nut, so you can tilt the shade until the light falls exactly where you want it on the picture or mirror below.

Where it works best

Think hallways, staircases, living rooms and dining rooms, anywhere there is a painting, print or mirror that deserves proper light rather than whatever is left over from the main room lighting. It also does a good job over shelving or artwork in a home office.
