Light that hangs rather than juts out

Some porch lanterns fix flat to the wall and stare straight ahead. The Klampenborg chain lantern does something different, dropping on a run of chain so the light sits out in the space rather than pinned to the wall, with a broad tilted cap shading a bulb held in a domed glass shade below.

A cool silver grey

The body is powder coated over 304 grade stainless steel in this silver grey finish, a cool, slightly metallic tone rather than a flat colour, with the stainless steel underneath built to stand up to rain and salt air without pitting or dulling. Below the cap, a rounded glass shade with a faint seeded texture wraps around the bulb, breaking the light up rather than showing it as one flat glow.

How It Works

One E27 lamp holder sits inside the glass, angled so most of the light spills downward and outward rather than glaring up under the cap (the bulb itself is not supplied). The suspension chain is adjustable between 36cm and 97.5cm, so the drop can be set to suit a low porch ceiling or a taller entrance, and the fitting will dim if it is fitted with a dimmable bulb.

Where It Works Best

Good over a front step, along a covered walkway, or wherever a wall mounted lantern would be too wide for the space. Because it hangs centrally rather than reaching out sideways, it tends to suit narrower porches and recessed doorways particularly well, and its IP44 rating means it can also handle a sheltered outdoor spot that catches some rain or spray.

Elstead Lighting

Klampenborg is part of the Elstead Lighting collection. The brand takes its name from The Elstead Forge in Alton, Hampshire, where its history began, and remains led by the same Lucas family today.
