A lantern that hangs rather than sits

Where most outdoor lanterns bolt to a wall or stand on a post, the Kinsale chain lantern drops down from a ceiling or porch canopy on a length of black chain, six sided and tapering to a small finial at the base. Clear bevelled glass runs around all six faces, so the light spreads out rather than beaming in one direction.

It is made in black, cast from a polymer body with polycarbonate glazing rather than real glass or metal, chosen so it can hang outside indefinitely without rusting or the panels clouding over.

How it works

One E27 lamp holder sits inside, on Class II wiring that needs no earth connection. The chain lets you set the drop anywhere between roughly 63.5cm and 73cm, so it is easy to get the lantern sitting at the right height whether your porch is deep or shallow.

Where it works best

This is a porch and entrance piece more than a garden one, the kind of light you hang above a front door, in a recessed porch, or over a covered outdoor seating area where a post or wall bracket would not suit as well. It holds up well in exposed, coastal conditions too.
