A carriage lantern that can take the weather

Kerry has the pitched roof, bevelled panels and drop finial of an old fashioned carriage lamp, the kind you would once have found either side of a stable door or a country porch. Cast in black polymer with polycarbonate standing in for glass, it keeps that traditional shape without the rust or pitting a real metal and glass lantern would eventually pick up outdoors.

Black finish

The finish is a matte, slightly textured black rather than a gloss paint, so from a few paces away it reads as painted ironwork. Up close the moulded roof lines, finial and drop point are crisp enough that the polymer body doesn't look like a plastic stand in for the real thing.

How It Works

A single E27 lamp holder sits inside the lantern housing; the bulb itself is not supplied, so fit an LED lamp of your choice before switching on. Wiring is Class II, so no earth connection is needed. The scrolled arm can be fitted with the lantern hanging below it or, turned the other way, with the lantern sitting above the arm, so it can be mounted to suit whichever orientation looks right on your wall. Fit a dimmable bulb and the fitting will work with a dimmer switch, though it will not dim on a standard non dimmable lamp.

Where It Works Best

It suits a front door, side gate or garage wall, and is rated IP44, so it is built to cope with rain and damp rather than just decorative outdoor use. That makes it a reasonable option for coastal or otherwise exposed spots where a metal fitting would corrode faster than this polymer and polycarbonate one. The restrained shape also means it sits comfortably on a plainer modern facade rather than needing a period property to look right.
