Elstead Kerry Single Chain Lantern - Black

A porch lantern built to hang, not mount

Most of the Kerry range fixes flat to a wall, a pier or a post, but this version is designed to hang. A single length of black chain drops from the ceiling or canopy above a porch, carrying a traditional four sided lantern down into the space below rather than sitting flush against a surface. The tapering shape narrows from a stepped cap at the top to a turned finial at its foot, with a bevelled glass panel on each of its four sides.

Black polymer and polycarbonate

In place of cast metal, this lantern is moulded from a dense black polymer, with clear polycarbonate standing in for the glass. The polymer holds a deep, even matte black that will not flake, rust or pit the way a painted or powder coated metal lantern can once salt air and weather get to it, while the polycarbonate panels stay clear and impact resistant, letting the bulb inside show through plainly rather than being diffused.

How It Works

It takes a single E27 bulb, not supplied, held in a fixed position beneath the cap. Fit a dimmable E27 bulb and the lantern will dim on a compatible circuit; a standard bulb will not respond to a dimmer. The chain itself allows some flexibility in drop, so it can hang anywhere between around 62.5cm and 73cm from its fixing point, making it possible to set the lantern at the right height for the porch, canopy or covered walkway it's going into.

Where It Works Best

It was designed with coastal and seafront properties in mind, holding up to salt laden air and the odd knock that would age a painted metal lantern quickly. It suits any covered porch, entrance or outdoor walkway where a traditional lantern look is wanted with less upkeep than metal demands, and because it hangs rather than mounts, it needs a ceiling, beam or canopy overhead rather than a bare wall to fix to.
