Elstead Holborn Single Small Half Lantern - Verdigris

A patina that's already found its character

The Holborn half lantern takes the glazed box shape of a traditional carriage lantern and gives it a verdigris finish, the mottled blue green patina that normally only appears on brass left outdoors for years. This is the single light, smaller bodied version of the range, sized for a narrower wall or a single front door rather than a wide porch.

Verdigris finish

Solid brass sits underneath the colour, and no two lanterns carry quite the same mix of blue green tones and darker bronze patches, since the ageing effect is worked in by hand rather than sprayed on as one flat shade. Clear glass panels on three sides show off the fitting's box shape and let the bulb inside do the work, rather than hiding behind frosted or textured glass.

How it works

One E14 bulb sits on a small pillar inside the lantern, visible through the glass on the front and both sides. Elstead specify an LED lamp for this fitting and it isn't supplied, so you'll need to add your own on installation. Wired for mains use on a Class I circuit, it's dimmable too, so long as the bulb fitted is a dimmable one.

Where it works best

Rated IP44, it's built for somewhere with a degree of shelter, a covered porch, beside a front door under an overhang, or either side of a garage doorway, rather than fully exposed to driving rain. Its smaller footprint compared with the two light Holborn makes it the better choice for a narrower wall, a slim porch pillar, or anywhere the larger version would crowd the space.

Holborn is part of Elstead's outdoor range, a British lighting group whose roots trace back to the Elstead Forge in Alton, Hampshire, and which remains led today by the same Lucas family. Is this Holborn lantern suitable for outdoor use? Yes. It's IP44 rated and designed for sheltered outdoor spots such as a porch or a covered doorway, rather than fully open positions exposed to driving rain.

Will the verdigris finish change further once it's fitted? Elstead apply the verdigris patina during manufacture, so the finish you receive is the intended look rather than a stage in an ongoing process, though like any outdoor fitting it will continue to weather gently with age and exposure.

Does this lantern come with a bulb? No. It takes a single E14 bulb, with an LED specified by Elstead, but you'll need to supply your own.

Is the single light Holborn dimmable? Yes, as long as you fit a dimmable E14 bulb. A standard non dimmable bulb won't respond to a dimmer switch.
