A shade with a working past
There's something of the old canteen or factory floor about the Franklin pendant, a broad dome shade slung on a long cord that lands somewhere between retro and utilitarian. It's a shape that has been doing this job for decades, tidied up just enough for a modern kitchen.
A cool, muted grey
This version comes in a soft grey Elstead calls Tarpaulin, glossy on the outside with a pale interior to the dome. The ceiling pan is finished in the same grey as the shade, so the fitting reads as one clean line from ceiling to pendant rather than a mix of parts, and a vented collar at the top of the shade adds a bit of quiet, industrial detail.
How It Works
A single E27 bulb sits inside the dome and throws its light back out from the pale interior, spreading it wider across a room than a direct downlight would manage. Fit a dimmable bulb and you can turn things down for evenings or keep the room bright over a worktop or table.
Where It Works Best
The cord can be set anywhere from around 30cm to 235cm, giving it enough reach to hang low over a dining table or kitchen island, or sit higher in a room with less ceiling height. With a 30cm shade, it works well as a single central fitting or in a run of two or three spaced along a kitchen counter or breakfast bar.
