Most brass lanterns take years outdoors before they develop this kind of blue green colouring. The Downing Street wall lantern in verdigris skips the wait, arriving with the aged patina already worked into the solid brass, so it looks settled onto a garden wall or porch from the day it is fitted.

Solid brass, coloured to look decades old

Underneath the verdigris finish this is solid brass, built with a domed, vented cap above a rectangular glazed box. The finish sits in the metal rather than on top of it, so the muted blue green tone reads consistently from whichever angle you view it, and the glass panels on all four sides let the bulb inside show through from the front, back and both sides.

How It Works

A single E27 LED bulb sits on a lamp holder inside the glazed box, protected from the weather by the four glass panels and the vented cap above, which lets rising heat escape without letting rain in. Fit a dimmable bulb and the lantern will dim on a compatible dimmer switch, a standard bulb will not. This is a Class I fitting wired directly into the mains, so we would always recommend a qualified electrician handles the installation.

Rated IP44, the Downing Street lantern is built to stay outside permanently rather than duck under cover, so it works well either side of a front door, on a garden wall, or lighting a side passage. The verdigris finish suits stone, render or planting particularly well, spots where a bright polished brass fitting would stand out more than blend in.
