A lantern that hangs rather than projects

The Chicago drops from a ceiling rose on a length of black chain, rather than reaching out from a wall arm or topping a post, so it hangs free in the centre of a porch or entrance the way an old coach lamp used to. Its ribbed crown and pointed drop finial give it a distinct silhouette whether the light inside is on or off.

Textured black with clear seeded glass

The lantern case is cast in aluminium and finished in a textured black that hides fingerprints and weather marks well outdoors. It is glazed with clear seeded glass, the kind with small trapped bubbles that scatter the light rather than showing a bare bulb through flat panes. The chain and ceiling rose share the same black finish, so the whole fitting reads as one piece from below.

How It Works

One E27 bulb sits centrally inside the lantern, showing through the glass from any angle rather than from one side only. Choose a dimmable bulb and it will work with a dimmer switch indoors; a standard bulb will simply switch on and off. It is a Class I fitting, so it needs an earthed supply, and should be installed by a qualified electrician.

Where It Works Best

Because it hangs rather than projects, the Chicago suits a recessed porch, an open canopy over a front door, or a covered walkway, anywhere there is a ceiling or beam to fix into. Hanging it centrally over a doorway keeps the light directly over the step rather than off to one side, and the chain can be shortened so it sits at the right height for a lower canopy.

Does the Chicago lantern come with a bulb? No. It takes one E27 bulb, not included, so you can choose the colour temperature and brightness yourself; an LED bulb is recommended.

Can I adjust how low the lantern hangs? Yes. Extra links can be removed from the chain, which takes the total drop from the ceiling down to around 510mm at its shortest, or leaves it at its full 1510mm if left unshortened.

Is the Chicago lantern dimmable? Yes, as long as you fit a dimmable E27 bulb. A standard, non dimmable bulb will not dim even on a dimmer switch circuit.
