Elstead Chicago Single Small Chain Lantern - Textured Black

A hanging lantern for a covered porch

Rather than sitting on a wall arm or a post, this Chicago lantern drops from a ceiling rose on a length of black chain, so it hangs free in the middle of a porch or entrance the way an old carriage lamp would. The ribbed crown and pointed drop finial give it a distinct shape whether it is lit or switched off.

Textured black and bubbled glass

Cast in aluminium and finished in textured black, the lantern case is glazed with clear seeded glass, the kind with small trapped bubbles that scatter the light rather than showing a plain bulb through flat glass. The chain and ceiling rose share the same black finish so the whole fitting reads as one piece from below.

How it works

One E27 bulb fits inside the lantern, sitting centrally so it shows through the glass from any angle. It is a Class I fitting, so it needs an earthed supply, and takes a dimmable bulb if you want to control the level from indoors.

Where it works best

Because it hangs rather than projects from the wall, it is suited to a recessed porch, an open canopy over a front door, or a covered walkway where there is a ceiling to fix into. It keeps the lantern centred over a doorway rather than off to one side.
