A Coach Lantern for the Front Door
The Balmoral takes its outline from old coach lamps, a tapered roof rising to a domed cap and ball finial, sitting above a tall glazed case. It has the look of something that has hung on a country house wall for decades, though the wiring and fittings underneath are entirely modern.
Old Bronze finish
This version is finished in Old Bronze, a dark, almost charcoal tone with warmer brown catching the light along the raised edges and the roof seams. The four glass panels are seeded, so they carry a rippled, rain streaked texture rather than a flat clear surface, softening the bulbs behind them into a gentle glow. One panel opens on a hinge for access to the lamps inside.
How it works
Three E14 lamp holders stand in a row inside the lantern. With candle shaped bulbs in place, they read as three small flames sitting behind the textured glass once the sun goes down. It takes a permanent wired connection rather than a plug, so it is built to be switched on from indoors and left running for the evening.
Where it works best
At 61.5cm tall and 27.7cm wide it has enough scale to hold its own either side of a front door, along a porch, or on a garden wall, and the flat back plate mounts straight onto brick or render without extra brackets.
It sits within Elstead's range of coach lantern shapes, drawing on the sort of exterior lighting the company has built its name on since the 1970s from its base in Alton, Hampshire.
