Most of Elstead's Alderley pendants hang their square art glass shade face down. This trio mount version turns it upward instead, so the leaded glasswork becomes the first thing you notice on walking into the room, not something you only catch once the bulbs come on.

Vintage Bronze finish

In place of the chain suspension used elsewhere in the Alderley range, this pendant hangs from a solid rod finished in Vintage Bronze, a deep, warm tone that reads almost black along the rod and ceiling plate, with a richer, slightly coppery cast showing through on the shade's corner caps. The rod can be shortened at installation, so the same fitting can hang low over a table or sit close to the ceiling as a semi flush.

How it works

The square shade is built from bands of aqua and textured clear art glass, fanning outward from the centre of each side against pale ivory panels, all held together in traditional leaded work. Two E27 bulb holders sit inside facing upward, so the light bounces off the ceiling before it reaches the room, giving a softer, more diffused glow than a downward facing shade would. The fitting arrives with some straightforward assembly to complete.

Where it works best

Because the light is thrown upward rather than down, it suits rooms with lower ceilings where a conventional pendant might feel too close overhead, and anywhere you'd rather have ambient light spread across the ceiling than a direct pool of light below. Elstead lists it for living rooms, bedrooms, dining rooms and hallways, and the adjustable rod means it can be set high over a hallway run or lower over a dining table as the room calls for.
