An Outdoor Circuit That Knows When It's Dark
This wall mounted photocell kit gives an outdoor lighting circuit the ability to switch itself on at dusk and off again at dawn, without a timer, a smart plug or anyone remembering to flick a switch. A light sensor under the dome reads the actual level of daylight outside, so the circuit responds to real conditions rather than a fixed clock that drifts as the seasons change.
A Simple Black Housing Built For The Weather
The kit is finished in black, with the sensor itself sitting under a clear polycarbonate dome that lets daylight reach the internal sensor while keeping rain and dust out. It's a single, straightforward design made to be fitted once on the outside of a wall and left to get on with the job, so there's only the one option here rather than a choice of finishes.
How It Works
Inside the dome is a light sensitive photocell that measures ambient daylight and switches the circuit accordingly. It fits onto a standard NEMA socket, the connector most photocell controls use in the UK, and wires in through integrated terminals rather than loose flying leads. Collingwood specifies it for a 220 to 240V AC supply, and it draws under 1.5W itself, adding negligible load to whatever it's controlling. The kit includes the sensor unit and its mounting bracket, ready to be wired into an existing outdoor lighting circuit.
Where It Works Best
This is a job for an external wall, positioned close to the circuit it needs to control and somewhere it gets genuine daylight rather than being shaded by an eave, a porch roof or a security light. It suits garden and driveway lighting circuits, exterior wall and bulkhead lights, or any outdoor circuit that's currently switched only by hand or by a mechanical timer that needs resetting through the year.
About Collingwood Lighting
Collingwood Lighting designs and builds its LED products at its own site in Sywell, Northamptonshire, and has worked exclusively in LED technology since 2002. Collingwood says it was among the first manufacturers to bring fire rated, fully sealed for life and mains dimmable LED products to the UK electrical wholesale market. The company also holds an EcoVadis Gold medal, placing it in the top five percent of companies assessed globally for sustainability.
Good to Know
- Comes with a 2 year warranty.
- Rated IP54, protected against dust ingress and against water splashing from any direction, which is why it's built for fitting outside.
- Class II electrical construction, meaning it's double insulated and doesn't rely on an earth connection.
- Made from polycarbonate, measuring 125mm high, 80mm wide and 85mm deep, and weighing 0.2kg.
- Fits a standard NEMA socket, so it's compatible with existing photocell equipped fittings using that connector.
- Moonlight Design recommends installation by a registered NICEIC electrician.
Questions People Ask
What does the Collingwood Wall Mounted Photocell Kit do that a normal outdoor light switch can't?
It reacts to the actual daylight level through its own sensor, so an outdoor circuit switches on and off with real conditions outside rather than a preset time that has to be adjusted as sunset shifts through the year.
Can it replace an existing NEMA photocell that's already fitted?
Yes, because it uses a standard NEMA socket, it can generally replace another NEMA fitted photocell without altering the wiring that's already in place.
Does the housing let enough light through to trigger the sensor reliably?
The sensor sits under a clear polycarbonate dome rather than a solid cover, so it reads ambient daylight directly through the housing while remaining sealed against the weather.
What's included in the box?
The kit supplies the photocell sensor unit together with its wall mounting bracket, ready to be wired into an existing outdoor lighting circuit.
Will it run on a standard UK domestic mains supply?
Collingwood specifies the unit for a 220 to 240V AC supply, which covers the standard UK mains voltage.
