A Neat Way to Join Two Runs of 8mm LED Strip
Sometimes a lighting run has to stop and start again. A corner, a doorway, a joint in the carcass, or simply the end of one reel and the start of the next. This Collingwood connector, product code LSK2208SS, is the small part that carries the light across that gap. It clamps onto the copper pads at the end of two lengths of 8mm LED strip and joins them electrically, with no soldering iron anywhere near the job. Collingwood describes it as invisible once connected, and once it is tucked into a profile that is close to the truth.
Clear Polycarbonate With Copper Contacts
The body is moulded in clear polycarbonate, so it borrows the colour of whatever it is sitting against instead of showing up as a white or black lump in the middle of a run. Inside, copper contacts do the electrical work, pressing onto the exposed pads on the tape. A clamp lifts at either end, one for each length of strip, and the open channel between them is shallow by design. That slimness is the whole point. It has to drop into a standard aluminium profile alongside the tape without lifting the diffuser or leaving a visible bump once the light is on. This one is matched to Collingwood's 8mm LSV02 and LSV05 strip rather than being a generic joiner.
How It Works
The connector is supplied on its own, with no lead and no wiring tail, because it is meant to bring two strip ends together almost touching. Lift the clear clamp at one end, slide the cut end of the strip in until the copper pads sit under the contacts, and press the clamp shut. Do the same at the other end with the second length. Cut the tape only at the marked cut points, make sure the pads are clean and clear of adhesive backing, and check that the polarity markings on both strips agree before you close everything up. It is a two pin connector, so it is intended for single colour strip rather than colour changing tape. No tools are needed to make the joint.
Where It Works Best
This is a joining part, so it spends its life out of sight. Most often it ends up inside an aluminium extrusion under a kitchen wall unit, along a shelf, in a cove above a run of cabinetry, or behind a headboard, anywhere a single unbroken length of tape simply will not work. It also earns its keep on site when a reel has been cut a little short and a second piece has to make up the length, or when a run needs to pass a fixed obstacle and pick up again on the far side. It is never wired to the mains itself. It only passes along the low voltage supply already running through the strip, which on the LSV02 and LSV05 is 24V DC from a separate driver. Rated IP20, it belongs in dry indoor positions only, so keep it out of bathroom zones, outdoors, and anywhere it could meet moisture.
About Collingwood Lighting
Collingwood designs and manufactures its LED products in Sywell, Northamptonshire, and has been working with LED technology since 2002. The brand states that it was among the first to bring fire rated, fully sealed for life and mains dimmable LED products to the UK electrical wholesale market. It also holds an EcoVadis Gold medal, which places it in the top 5% of companies assessed for sustainability worldwide. Small parts like this connector are designed as part of a complete strip system, so the tape, the profiles and the accessories are all meant to work together.
Good to Know
- Backed by a 2 year warranty from Collingwood.
- Rated IP20, which offers no protection against water. Dry indoor locations only, not bathroom zones and not outdoors.
- Supplier data records the electrical class as Class I.
- Body material is polycarbonate with copper contacts.
- Made specifically for Collingwood LSV02 and LSV05 8mm strip. It is not a universal fit for other tape widths or different pad layouts.
- Two pin, so it suits single colour strip. It will not carry the extra channels needed for colour changing or tunable white tape.
- Dimming is handled by the driver and control gear feeding the run. The connector is a passive part and passes the supply through unchanged.
- Solder free and tool free to fit. Wipe the strip pads clean before clamping, as residue is the usual cause of a poor joint.
- This item is listed as non returnable.
- Moonlight Design recommends installation by a registered NICEIC electrician.
Questions People Ask
Does the Collingwood LSK2208SS connector need soldering?
No. The Collingwood LSK2208SS is a solder free strip to strip connector. A clear clamp lifts at each end, the cut end of the LED strip slides in, and pressing the clamp shut makes the electrical contact. No soldering iron and no tools are required.
Which LED strips does this connector fit?
This connector is made for Collingwood's LSV02 and LSV05 LED strip, both of which are 8mm wide. It is not a universal connector, so it will not suit tape of a different width or a different contact pad layout.
Can this connector be used in a bathroom?
No. This connector carries an IP20 rating, which gives no protection against water or moisture, so it is suitable for dry indoor locations only. Bathroom and outdoor LED strip installations need components rated for those conditions.
Will it fit inside an aluminium LED profile?
The Collingwood LSK2208SS has a deliberately slim body so it can sit inside most standard aluminium strip profiles alongside the tape without pushing against the diffuser. Internal channel depth varies between profile designs, so it is worth checking the profile you plan to use.
Does this connector work with dimmable LED strip?
Yes. The connector is a passive component that simply passes the low voltage supply from one length of strip to the next, so a dimmable run stays dimmable across the joint. Dimming performance is set by the driver and control gear, not by the connector.
