A complete 5 metre LED strip kit with the driver already in the box
Most LED tape is sold as a bare reel, leaving you to work out which power supply it needs. The Collingwood SP50 removes that step. You get a 5 metre reel of 4.8W/m flexible tape and a matching 30W 24V driver in one pack, so a straightforward strip run can be planned and wired without hunting through a separate accessories list. The tape is 8mm wide and carries 120 LEDs per metre, spaced closely enough that the light reads as a continuous line rather than a row of dots once it sits behind a lip or inside a profile.
Choosing between 2700K, 3000K and 4000K
The pack comes in three colour temperatures and the output shifts with each one. At 2700K the tape gives 430 lumens per metre, a warm and slightly amber light that settles nicely into living rooms and bedrooms. 3000K lifts that to 450 lumens per metre and lands in familiar warm white territory, which is the usual pick for kitchen cabinets. 4000K is the brightest of the three at 490 lumens per metre, a cleaner neutral white that keeps worktops and utility spaces looking crisp. All three render colour at CRI over 80 and throw a 120 degree beam, and Collingwood rates colour consistency at SDCM5, so lengths taken from the same reel should match one another.
How It Works
The tape runs at 24V DC, so it cannot go straight onto the mains. The supplied PS3024B power supply takes a 220 to 240V AC feed and converts it to a constant 24V output rated at 30W, which covers the full 5 metre reel with room to spare. It is a SELV unit with short circuit and overload protection built in. The strip comes with a flying lead of at least 200mm from one end for the run back to the driver, and it can be shortened at marked cut points every 100mm. A 3M self adhesive backing runs along the reverse, so once the surface is clean and dry the tape presses straight into place. Additional runs are wired in parallel rather than joined end to end.
Where It Works Best
This is an IP20 product, which means it has no protection against water and belongs in dry indoor locations only. Under kitchen wall units it turns a dark worktop into a usable prep surface. Set into a shadow gap or coving it washes a ceiling with soft indirect light. It also earns its place along shelving and inside display cabinets, under a staircase handrail, or hidden behind a headboard. Keep it away from bathrooms, from splashbacks that get wet, and from anywhere outdoors. Ambient temperature around the installation should stay at or below 40 degrees, so leave some air around the tape if it is going inside a sealed enclosure.
About Collingwood Lighting
Collingwood designs and manufactures its LED products in Sywell, Northamptonshire, and has concentrated on LED technology since 2002. The brand states it was among the first to bring fire rated, fully sealed for life and mains dimmable LED products to the UK electrical wholesale market. It also holds an EcoVadis Gold medal, placing it in the top 5 percent of companies assessed worldwide for sustainability.
Good to Know
- Covered by a 3 year guarantee from Collingwood.
- IP20 rated, meaning no protection against water or moisture. Dry indoor locations only, never a bathroom and never outdoors.
- Class III equipment running at extra low voltage, powered through the supplied 24V SELV driver.
- Dimming depends on the driver. Collingwood lists the dimmable option as driver dependent, so a compatible dimmable supply or a separate dimming interface is needed rather than anything on the strip itself.
- Maximum running length is 5 metres. Longer schemes need further reels wired in parallel, each properly supplied, rather than joined into one continuous line.
- Cut only on the marked points every 100mm. The product is listed as non returnable, so measure the run before you cut.
- LED lifetime is rated L70 30,000 hours, and the tape weighs 53g per metre.
- Wipe the tape with a dry or barely damp cloth once the supply is switched off. Avoid solvents, which can attack the coating and the adhesive.
- Moonlight Design recommends installation by a registered NICEIC electrician.
Questions People Ask
Does the Collingwood SP50 come with a driver?
Yes. The SP50 pack includes a Collingwood PS3024B power supply, a 30W constant voltage unit that converts a 220 to 240V AC mains feed into the 24V DC the strip needs. No separate driver is required for a single 5 metre reel.
Can the SP50 LED strip be cut to length?
Yes. The SP50 tape carries marked cut points every 100mm along the 5 metre reel, so it can be shortened to suit a run. Cuts must be made on those marks, and the product is listed as non returnable, so the length is worth checking twice.
Is the Collingwood SP50 suitable for a bathroom?
No. The SP50 is rated IP20, which gives no protection against water or moisture, so it is for dry indoor locations only and should not be fitted in a bathroom, a shower area or any outdoor position.
How bright is the Collingwood SP50 LED strip?
The SP50 draws 4.8W per metre and produces 430 lumens per metre at 2700K, 450 lumens per metre at 3000K and 490 lumens per metre at 4000K, an efficacy of 90 to 102 lumens per watt depending on the colour temperature chosen.
Can the Collingwood SP50 be dimmed?
Dimming the SP50 depends on the driver rather than the tape. Collingwood lists the dimmable option as driver dependent, so a dimmable 24V constant voltage supply or a separate dimming interface is required to achieve it.
